Purpose of the Portal:

  • The National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal allows victims to report cyber crime complaints online efficiently from any/all parts of the country.
  • It covers a wide range of cyber crimes including child sexual abuse material (CSAM), online financial frauds, mobile crimes, hacking, and more.

Types of Complaints and Reporting Options:

  1. Reporting Crimes Related to Women/Child:

    • Report Anonymously: File complaints related to online child pornography or sexually explicit content anonymously.
      • No personal information required.
    • Report and Track: Register with your name, mobile number, and email.
      • Verify yourself with OTP.
      • Fill required/mandatory fields include name, phone number, email, and details of the complaint.
      • Upload evidence such as screenshots, chat transcripts, etc.
  2. Reporting Other Cybercrimes:

    • Register using your name and valid Indian mobile number.
    • Receive OTP and complete verification.
    • Enter mandatory fields include name, phone number, email, and details of the complaint.
    • Upload evidence such as screenshots, chat transcripts, etc.
  3. What Evidence Should I Keep for Filing a Cybercrime Complaint?

    • URLs of webpages involved 
    • Copies of emails
    • Receipts from online money transfers
    • Bank statements
    • Brochures or pamphlets
    • Videos
    • Images
    • Receipts from credit card transactions
    • Chat transcripts / Screenshots
    • Call log screenshots of suspect mobile number/s

Information Required:

After Filing a Complaint:

  • Receive a confirmation message on the portal.
  • For “Report and Track” or “Report Other Cybercrimes,” receive an SMS and email with a unique complaint reference number.

Checking Complaint Status:

  • Use your complaint reference number to track progress on the portal.

  • False reporting may lead to legal consequences under the Indian Penal Code.
  • Provide as much information as possible for effective action by law enforcement.

Customer Liability:

According to RBI guidelines, if you report the fraud within 72 hours and it occurs due to negligence on the bank’s part, or even if it occurs due to your own negligence and the fraud continues after you report it, you are not liable for further losses.
